The Southern Counties Branch of the Institution of Mining and
Metallurgy (IMM) has arranged a lecture to be held in Room 1.31
of the Royal School of Mines, Prince Consort Road, South
Kensington, at 6.00 p.m. on Tuesday 12 December 2000.
The paper is entitled "Archaeometallurgy, the use of knowledge of
modern metallurgy to explain technologies in ancient times".
The speaker will be Professor Andre Paulin, Professor of Extractive
Non-ferrous Metallurgy in the Department of Materials and Metallurgy,
Faculty of Natural Sciences and Rngineering, University of Ljubljana,
Slovenia.
Amongst the points outlined in the synopsis of the talk are:
The metallogenic examination of a fragment of copper cake from
Jurka Vas, Slovenia, from 11th to 10the centruy B.C., outlining the
technology proposed for how it was made;
Metallogenic investigation of three speiss ingots from Kanalski Vrh,
Slovenia -- the history of speisses and their role in copper smelting in
the Bronze Age;
etc.
As a member of Coucil of this branch of the IMM, I am sure anyone
interested would be welcome. There is no charge for attending.
