Social Exclusion: What is it, and How can we measure it in a meaningful way?
The term social exclusion is widely used and yet there is no consistent
definition of its meaning. As policies are increasingly aimed at tackling
exclusion and promoting inclusion, questions arise about such things as the
relationship between geographical areas and exclusion and the effectiveness of
different strategies to reduce exclusion. It is therefore important that
researchers consider the multi-faceted nature of social exclusion and think
about how we can undertake research in this field. Drawing on a project
undertaken by the National Centre for Social Research for Scottish Homes which
sought to design a national study of neighbourhoods within which social
exclusion might be measured, this talk will consider what social exclusion is
and how it might be measured.
