Many thanks to the large number of colleagues who responded
to my query regarding Personal Tutors for students taking
two languages. Responses were received from 27 different
institutions, in Britain & Ireland (and 1 from Belgium).
there is some variation interminology: in some Scottish and
Irish universities, students have 'Advisers of Studies'.
22 reported that students taking 2 languages had just ONE
Personal Tutor. (In some cases the Personal Tutor is not
necessarily a lecturer in either of the two languages
concerned.)
4 reported that students taking 2 languages had Personal
Tutors in BOTH languages.
In one case, a 'hybrid' system operates: 1 tutor in the
first two years, 2 in the last two.
Our Belgian correspondent - merci, Cecile - reminds us that
Personal Tutors do not generally exist in the rest of
Europe.
