CURRENT PRACTICE AT SHEFFIELD UNIVERSITY
> 1) Do you supply standard calculators
> to students?
NO. WE HAVE LISTS OF APPROVED AND PROHIBITED
MODELS WHICH ARE UP-DATED EACH YEAR. STUDENTS
CONSULT THE LISTS AND GET A MARKER ATTACHED IF IT IS
AN APPROVED MODEL. THEY ARE WARNED THAT
PROHIBITED MODELS CAN LEAD TO DISCIPLINARY CHARGES.
> 2) If so, which type or range of calculators
> are supplied?
WE HOLD A SMALL SUPPLY OF CASIO FX-100 OR SIMILAR
MODELS IN EACH EXAM HALL FOR USE IN EMERGENCIES
ONLY.
>
> 3) If you do not supply standard calculators,
> do you issue guidelines from central
> administration regarding the approved
> types, or is it the responsibility of the
> Faculty/School to issue information
> to students?
IT IS A CENTRAL MATTER CONTAINED IN OUR UNIVERSITY'S
EXAMINATION REGULATIONS AND MANAGED CENTRALLY.
IT IS COVERED IN OUR STUDENT HANDBOOK AND ON THE
WEB. WE ASK ACADEMIC DEPARTMENTS TO REMIND
STUDENTS EACH AUTUMN. - SEE OUR WEB-SITE AND THE
PAGES FOR CURRENT STUDENTS
>
> 4) Is the type of calculator to be used in
> an examination indicated on the front
> of the exam paper?
NO
> > 5) What checks are made to ensure
> students are using the recommended
> type(s)?
INVIGILATORS LOOK FOR THE UNIVERSITY MARKER AND
ONLY CHECK/REPORT THOSE WITHOUT ONE.
