I was involved in the Alderley Copper Mines (about 25 years ago) when it
was proposed to open them to the public. The bottom line is that it went
to appeal at the Lords. In the debate it was stated by Lord (forgotten
his name but used to be the chair of the NCB) that once a mine always a
mine. He was in fact talking about coal mines but the statement set a
president for all mines as coal was not mentioned, so in law there is no
difference between a coal mine and a metalliferrous mine.
A further point of contact may be the owners of the Ecton Mines, who use
the old workings for public, educational and caver access.
