Dear All,
Things brings the matter onto such mines as Ash Gill Head. It is obviously
clear it is a geographic place, but, apart from old outlying small fell farms
there is no village or substantial place nearby. So, the supposed
superstition(s) with all tree named places may well have naturally 'migrated' to the
mines. The names of farms are also an indicator, with many mines in Mid-Wales (&
elsewhere of course), having the same name as the farm who's land they are
on/within - and the names of mountains/hills carrying over as well.
The huge number of collieries also have the same wide range of names... but
we won't go down that route as the subject will go on and on!!!
Regards, Bernard
