Just to bring things around full circle--
I can name off about six or seven animals (most have already mentioned),
including the cat, which seem to at times carry demonic associations in the
Middle Ages. Most of them seem to be seen as demonic only in certain
contexts, rather than being perceived as wholly evil.
The question I originally had was whether these associations were so serious
that they led to mass cat massacres ("hundreds of thousands of cats" was the
phrase cited), or that medievals didn't realize the cat's role in rodent
elimination.
