Does the new translation really change the book much, as I have heard?
>It is one I very much love to hate; or hate to love: I don't know which. It
>would be instructive to hear from someone who's read the original and/or could
>tell me whether Huizinga published his *footnotes* anywhere. Not that his
>evidence matters, it's the book's opinions which count, and have counted, with
>so many generations of readers.
Having read the Herfsttij der Middeleeuwen, I can assure everybody that the
difference between the original Dutch and the first English translation of
Huizinga is enormous. Great sections which appear in the original are
omitted in the translation, and the new translation - which, admittedly, I
have yet to see - has long been necessary.
