The iconography here is unusual. Note _two_ Magi only, dressed as pagan philosophers. For those with access to JSTOR, there's a discussion and a much better image in C. R. Morey, "The Silver Casket of San Nazaro in Milan", _American Journal of Archaeology_ 23 (1919), 101-25 (photograph on p. 103). The casket's Magi scene can also be seen to good effect at least twice in this brief, Italian-language video from the Museo:

As the video notes, the two figures with the platters have also been interpreted as shepherds or as angels, rather than Magi. And the platters, which suggest an offering of gifts and thus the Magi, are empty.

In these views the Magi are not shown. Instead we see St. Michael, who is said to be leading them, approaching a seated Madonna and Child. Another example of an angel leading the Magi is in the later thirteenth-century fresco from Sopoćani linked at no. 39, below.

Gordon Plumb's comment on the third of these four panels, at <http://tinyurl.com/y8qrac6>:
"Centre and right-hand heads and crowns are C13 restoration, the other one more recent; some of the drapery C12, but far more C15 and more recent. Red background possibly largely ancient, but the compiler of the restoration diagram I am using could not be certain,. Half of the bordering half roundels edging the panel are original on the bottom and all but one on the left-hand side are as well. Most of the rest are from various later restorations, some of them ancient but undatable. What is interesting here is that the restorers made a serious attempt to copy the earlier style in their restorations."
