medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Dear all,

This is exactly the problem with Padre Pio's case. As long as we do not have easy access to these files, every comment whether it is of the type:
Padre Pio was a fraud
or of the type:
Doctors have scientifically studied his stigmata and found no evidence of foul play
are completely useless. They are taken from the books that have their own agenda and very little to do with objectivity and accuracy. Mind you, I am referring to the writings of the both camps. Anyway, the basic argument is that there is a strong and dangerous possibility that this conversation will turn into a religious argument which would be lamentable. However, Padre Pio does belong to this list, for he is a present day example of thoroughly medieval cult (admittedly with additions such as web sites). Personally, I believe that the problem that has delayed his canonisation has not been the one of authenticity, but the fact that Rome does not want to see that kind of cult. It is too popular and too medieval.
Cheers,
Jussi Hanska
