medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

> Bless you, but this is a case of "would like to read" not "need to read" so
please, no commission. (Now if the illuminator was 12th C .......)
a common --but consistently unaddressed-- problem among Art Hysterians is the
extent to which the conditions of artistic production can be extrapolated from
the period for which we have written evidence (generally beginning, in the
North, c. 1250) backwards to previous epochs (e.g., the 12th c.).
as i (dimly) understand it, though the techniques of Jean-Luc's 15th c.
illuminator used were, fundamentally, identical to those which would have been
used by all his colleagues for centuries before, the conditions under which he
worked were quite radically different --as different as an itinerant, secular
craftsman/artist with an erratic clientele can be from one functioning within
(and for) a monastic community.
though i cannot "prove" it (duh), such differences had consequences which
extended way beyond the purely social or economic --the very nature of the
images produced, their origins and meanings, would have been radically
different.
this is one (perhaps among others) explanation for the observable
difference(s) which we see between the "styles" which we call "Romanesque" and
"Gothic."
the original text on Jean-Luc's site being excessively tedious to wade
through, the Gesta article i mentioned earlier (and which i will gladly send
to anyone) might be a welcome pons asinorum for those wishing to knowledge
themselves of its essence without breaking a sweat.
