Research Statisticians
The MRC Biostatistics Unit aims to advance medical science by the
development of statistical methodology. It is one of Europe’s leading
biostatistics research institutions and comprises a number of
internationally renowned statisticians.
The Unit has an exciting opportunity to offer two posts, either at a
senior or more junior level, from among the following three general areas-
1. To work with Prof Simon Thompson and Dr Linda Sharples on developing
a programme of research addressing problems in long-term health economic
and public health modelling, including the assessment of model fit,
model criticism and model uncertainty.
2. To work with Dr David Spiegelhalter on (a) a research programme on
developing generic Bayesian methodology concerning model criticism,
model comparison, and sensitivity analysis to prior assumptions, and (b)
substantial practical applications of Bayesian methods
3. To work with Prof Vern Farewell on developing a programme of research
dealing with methods of statistical inference for challenging data
structures, motivated as appropriate by involvement in collaborative
medical research projects.
For the senior level post, applicants will have a PhD in a relevant
topic and at least five years experience of research in statistics.
Ideally, the candidates will be able to take the lead in planning,
developing and managing their own research, and to develop junior
statisticians and PhD students.
The starting salary at the senior level is likely to be in the range of
£35,000 to £38,000 per annum, or at the more junior level £25,000 to
£28,000 (depending on qualifications and experience), supported by a
flexible pay and reward policy, 30 days annual holiday entitlement and
an optional final salary MRC pension scheme. Excellent sports and social
facilities are also available on site.
