The everging poet of today must be young, highly-educated, and attuned to
the Horatian praxis of writing to please target audiences. He or she
must be a committed professional, able to negotiate the academic world
as a student, teacher, published author; willing to mock the conventional
features of the mass poetry market but to use and be used by them when
necessary; and skilled at reifying the aesthetic value of inchoate
literary productions. In other words, the everging poet of today must
be a talented aesthetic wonk techie. In the workshops of the verge,
new mannerisms are always percolating, and the everging poet must
laminate to suit - there, in the groves of academe, where the ghosts
of Marx & Matthew Arnold engender an elite marketplace,
and enthusiastic youngsters still have time & cash to spend.
