Thank you Stephen: this is reassuring!
An old friend once said to me (and he was trying to be kindly) "David, you could have become a considerable scholar if you had ever learned how to focus" and at another University, the administrator putting together the REF submission said accusingly "your entry is too diverse! We could have put some of it in the History or the Arts submission, so we want you to take out the irrelevant publications. It doesn't read like a Business School entry". But that mono-directional approach of course is the preferred style in scholarly research, especially for the REF in the UK.But it makes people boring.
Now back to my Perpetual Motion machine and my paper on "how to break up the compost heap without disturbing the nesting toads"...
