Welcome to the Teaching-Statistics list

[Teaching Statistics logo]

This list is for those concerned with the initial teaching of statistics in all phases of education. It is related to the objectives of the journal Teaching Statistics and the associated Trust, and is for discussion of how to make teaching and learning statistics more effective.

I would like this list to provide a place where all of us concerned with the initial teaching of statistics, or with supporting those who do this, can pool our experiences, our advice and our queries, so that we do not always have to reinvent the wheel from scratch. I hope too that this list will be a useful forum for posting notices of workshops, conferences and other gatherings related to teaching statistics.

For many people in schools and colleges (and even in university departments) the number of colleagues also involved with teaching statistics is very small. This list can be our "virtual staffroom" of fellow teachers of statistics. Some of the best lists in the Internet world achieve a high degree of collegiality and mutual support. I hope this list develops that sort of spirit and usefulness.

On the rest of this page you will find links for tasks related to the list and to information about teaching statistics. Click on the relevant link below. For a number of tasks a special mailto: box with most of the work already done for you will appear when you use a link. This requires a reasonably up-to-date version of a browser such as Netscape or Internet Explorer. (Those which are intended to put text in the body of a message will only work properly with recent versions of Netscape, and not with Internet Explorer, so alternative versions are provided below.)

Please use this email link to let me know of any problems of errors and omissions in the links on these pages, and about additional, new or changed information about teaching statistics you think it would be useful to have links to here.

Messages for the list (and joining the list)

Messages for circulation to list members should be emailed to teaching-statistics@mailbase.ac.uk
Note that only members can post messages. (This is a mild safeguard against junk mail.)

To join you need to send an email to mailbase@mailbase.ac.uk with the message
subscribe teaching-statistics Annie Boddy
with your real name replacing Annie Boddy.

To do this now, click here if you are using Netscape and here if you are using Internet Explorer. With Internet Explorer you will need to add the message text; with recent versions of Netscape it will need to be modified to show your real name and remove the text in < >. You then need to send the message.

How to leave the list

To leave the list send the following email message to mailbase@mailbase.ac.uk

leave teaching-statistics
or
unsubscribe teaching-statistics

To do this now, click here if you are using Netscape and here if you are using Internet Explorer. With Internet Explorer you will need to add the message text; with recent versions of Netscape it will be shown already. You then need to send the message.

If this does not work a common reason is that your email address has changed, perhaps only slightly, since you first joined. In that case you will need to ask the list owner for help.

If you do get into a situation where you want the list owner's help, send a message to teaching-statistics-request@mailbase.ac.uk.  Include a brief explanation of the problem. This will wing its electronic way to me, as the relevant list owner / manager.

How to suspend mail from mailbase lists

If you are going away temporarily, and do not want mail to be sent from mailbase lists while you are away, send an email to mailbase@mailbase.ac.uk, saying

suspend mail all

To do this now, click here if you are using Netscape and here if you are using Internet Explorer. With Internet Explorer you will need to add the message text; with recent versions of Netscape it will be shown already. You then need to send the message.

and when you return, send the message (also to mailbase@mailbase.ac.uk)

resume mail all

To do this now, click here if you are using Netscape and here if you are using Internet Explorer. With Internet Explorer you will need to add the message text; with recent versions of Netscape it will be shown already. You then need to send the message.
