This list is devoted to The Material Renaissance: Costs and
Consumption in Italy, 1300-1650

This is a collaborative research project which aims to explore
o the comparative prices of different types of goods in
Renaissance Italy over both time and place
o the market for domestic goods such as food and clothing
o the market for objects now considered 'art', particularly
panel paintings, metalwork and antiquities
o whether the relationship between the marketplace and
individual or institutional artistic patronage changed
between the 14th and the 17th centuries
o whether art objects were bought and sold in ways that
distinguished them from other commodities
o the gendered nature of Renaissance consumption
o how social communities of buyers and sellers were formed
o the different means by which objects were acquired in
courts and republican communities

This e-mail discussion group is intended to
o provide a forum in which these and related issues can be
discussed informally
o provide a mechanism for the exchange of useful information
(references to relevant archival material, publications,
conferences and symposia, etc.)
o keep participants informed of the progress of the project
