As usual, we have a section on upcoming conferences and job openings and a section on network information. Last, we would also like to invite comments and contributions to the newsletter and we take this opportunity to thank readers for their comments and contributions so far. The Editors ------------------------------------------------------ | | | 2. Agricultural History in Spain | | | ------------------------------------------------------ Economic History has experienced significant development in Spain since the beginning of the Seventies, with its growth being related to the expansion of the Faculties of Economics, where most of the economic historians are based. At the same time, the Spanish Economic History Association (ASOCIACION DE HISTORIA ECONOMICA) was founded (380 individual members in Dec. 1993) and the Journal of Economic History (REVISTA DE HISTORIA ECONOMICA) saw its first issue published in 1980. This general expansion of the subject soon resulted in the appearance of more specialist bodies, as was the case of the SEMINARIO DE HISTORIA AGRARIA (Agricultural History Society) founded at the end of 1989, when, at the II Congress of Agricultural History celebrated in Murcia, a group of historians interested in the history of the rural world decided to found some organization to coordinate debate and communication between specialists. This meeting led to subsequent annual meetings of this body, which maintains an intensive and vigorous debate amongst its members. The association has now 193 members and its President is Ramon Garrabou (Universidad Autonoma de Barcelona) As a further consequence, a journal was founded; since the first issue of NOTICIARIO DE HISTORIA AGRARIA (Agricultural History Journal) published in 1991 by the SEMINARIO DE HISTORIA AGRARIA, with the support of the Universities of Murcia and Zaragoza and edited by Jose Miguel Martinez-Carrion (Universidad de Murcia), five more numbers have appeared and it has consolidated its position as a specialized economic history journal. The next meeting of the SEMINARIO DE HISTORIA AGRARIA will be held in Baeza (Jaen) from 31st. May to 3rd. June 1995.It will be opened by a lecture and subsequent discussion devoted to AGRICULTURAL HISTORY AND AGROECOLOGY and two more sessions where papers are called for : one on AGRARIAN ACTIVITY INDICATORS: METHODOLOGY AND QUANTIFYING PROBLEMS and the other on RURAL CONFLICT ASSOCIATED WITH POLITICAL SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC CHANGE.There will be ten simultaneous small seminars. The Thuenen Society | | | ------------------------------------------------------ BACKGROUND AND STATEMENT OF PURPOSE OF THE THUENEN SOCIETY, NORTH AMERICAN DIVISION May, 1994 The Thuenen Society, North American Division was formed in August, 1991. It is the of Tellow, Germany. The latter group was founded in September, 1990 on the former estate of Johann Heinrich von Thuenen (1783-1850). The objectives of the Thuenen Society is the advancement of the general welfare of humanity along the lines that Thuenen proposed and followed. The Society is concerned for the promotion of interdisciplinary research and studies in the social and physical sciences, the arts and humanities. This is in keeping with Thuenen's eclectic interest and intellectual drive. Thuene- n's path breaking work in location and wage theory, his keen interest in economics, and his deep appreciation of the environment can serve as a model for all who strive for solutions to the world's problems. In keeping with these broad views, the Thuenen Society has established several sets of objectives. Not least important is encourage the exchange of information through annual meetings of persons interested in areas relating to Von Thuenen's concerns. These would include, but are not limited, to persons in the fields of geography, ecology, economics, history, urban and regional planning, sociology, philosophy, and agricultural sciences. The Society hopes to facilitate its members attempts to secure funding for research projects by offering networking opportunities, letters of support and, where applicable, serving as an institutional applicant for grants. For example, the Society is working with its parent organization, the Thuenengesellschaft, e.V. of Tellow, Germany to facilitate historical research using the Von Thuenen Archives located at the Universitaet Rostock, Germany. The President of the Thuenengesellschaft has indicated that he feels that these achieves contain correspondence and data which can provide the basis for numerous articles and books. While the Society currently has no funding available, it is enthusiastic about facilitating the research of researchers who wish to pursue this research opportunity. The Society can provide letters of support and aid in the establishment of professional contacts in Germany for qualified scholars seeking grants for travel to Germany to pursue this research. The Society is also working with the Thuenengesellschaft, e.V. to help in the purchase of the original Thuenen estate located in Tellow, Germany. Tellow is approximately 20 miles south of the Baltic port city of Rostock. It is hoped that the estate, where the Thuenen museum is currently located, can one day become a site for international meetings and scientific and economic research. The first annual meeting of the Thuenen Society was held in August of 1992 in Asheville, North Carolina. This meeting was successful in bringing together a number of scholars from various disciplines representing many universities and government agencies from the United States and Germany. The second annual meeting, held in Washington, D.C. and hosted by the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany, was even more successful than the first. Scholars and practitioners presented papers and exchanged information on a variety of subjects. At this meeting the first award for the most outstanding student paper was also presented to a young historian. The next meeting of the Thuenen Society is scheduled to be held in late September in St. Louis, Mo. The Anhauser Busch company has agreed to host the Society's meeting. For information concerning membership or the St. Louis meeting, contact Jon L. Smith, President of the Thuenen Society, North American Division at the address below. Jon L. Economic History Journal | | | -------------------------------------------------------- A MACHINE-READABLE LIST OF CONTENTS OF THE ECONOMIC HISTORY REVIEW, 1927-1993 This list of contents is intended to supplement the three cumu- lative indexes published by the Society in book form. It contains all the entries in these cumulative indexes, save for book reviews, since the first issue of the Review in a form permitting rapid searches by author, title and year when used in conjunction with a bibliographical DBMS or word-processor (operating under MS-DOS). It is thus intended as a tool to assist in teaching and research. The list of contents is distributed on a high-density 3.5 inch floppy disk containing four files: one giving instructions on how to use the database; the database itself in a form to be imported directly into PAPYRUS, a dedicated bibliographical DBMS which is widely available in the UK higher education system, and in north America; and a chronological and author listing which can be imported as text files into all leading (DOS/WINDOWS) word- processing packages. HNSOURCE provides information, announcements, guides, references, and ready access to useful Internet sites -- FTP sites, WAIS sites, on-line library cata- logues, and other gophers. HNSOURCE is affiliated with the division of electronic resources of the History Network and acts as an element within H-Net. HNSOURCE contains three major sections: 1. ACCESS TO LIBRARIES: HYTELNET AND INTERNET GUIDES offers connections to a large number of on-line library cata logues throughout the world, special bibliographic resources, together with some guides to the nature and use of bitnet, telnet, and the internet. 2. ACCESS TO RESOURCES: FTP AND GOPHER SITES provides connec tions to electronic sites that store materials of interest to historians. HNSOURCE will access such materials for the user to read and/or copy. Sites include FTP and WAIS sites, gophers, and other Information Servers, many of which provide connections to still other locations. 3. NEWS, BOOKS, AND WEATHER provides announcements of various sorts, newsfeeds, some electronic books and reference works, and U.S. weather reports for all national Weather Bureau stations. 4.
