| Many of you will have seen the latest publicity
regarding the Mydoom Worm which attempts to harvest and transmit
itself to e-mail addresses found in various types of files
on your computer. We believe
a number of sites have already been infected as our anti-virus
measures
have
trapped
tens of thousands of contaminated messages so far. If you
receive an e-mail from our service that has an attachment
which you
suspect contains the worm, it will almost certainly be a
forged/harvested e-mail address as our service checks messages
in both directions.
If you have already been contacted by a list member who
has been affected by this virus and you would prefer to
prevent attachments from being circulated to your list
for a short period then you might wish to set the following
list option which can easily be selected from the Alphabetical
Keyword Listing Wizard:
Attachments= No
With this setting, all types of attachments are disallowed,
other than plain text (always allowed) and HTML text (which
is controlled
exculsively by the "Language=NoHTML" keyword
setting). With "Attachments= No", LISTSERV® rejects messages containing attachments and bounces them
back to the poster.
There is an alternative method of making documents available
to list members and that is use of the files area of your
list. This has benefits in that the documents can be updated
and you do not need to remember where you last saw the
document and whether you have the latest version. See http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/help/using/archives.htm for more details. |
